No, and nothing happens if you ignore it. It does not auto-convert into a paid plan - if you want to keep the mailboxes at the end you tell us, rather than us billing you by default.
None of these are what makes a renewal expensive - that is the registry price of the extension itself, and it varies enormously. A .site is $1.29 to register and over $40 to renew. Check the pricing page before you choose an extension.
